He was conferred with many awards and honors in India and abroad. He received Honorary Fellowship, in 2004, and the Third highest civilian award of the Government of India, Padma Bhushan in 2005. Also, Honorary Fellowship, in 2012, and was also honored by NDTV as one of the 25 greatest living legends in 2013.
